How to choose your moisturiser

Here’s How You Choose The Right Moisturiser For Your Skin Type

Moisturisation is key to healthy skin. There are a whole of products that hydrate and nourish your skin, but it’s important to pick the right moisturiser for your skin type to ensure it gets the necessary nutrients and the right treatment. Here’s how you can decide which one will the right one for your skin.

If you have dry, dehydrated skin: Your aim should be to lock in moisture and restore skin’s natural lipid or sebum layer. That means you pick a product that has high natural oil or emollient content. A creamy textured product is the way to go. Instead of using a moisturiser, those with very dry skin would benefit from using a cream or thick lotion. Pick products with cocoa butter or shea butter. Also look for natural hydrators like aloe vera or hyaluronic acid in your moisturiser. The dry, dehydrated skin type should layer their skin with a hydrating serum before applying your regular moisturizer. Since dry skin types start showing signs of aging like fine lines and age spots faster, you can use an anti-aging product as part of your night-time skin care routine.

If you have oily skin: You still cannot do without a moisturiser. Even very greasy skin types need product made for oily skin. You need to pick a lightweight, oil-control product that has high levels of skin hydrators that restore your skin’s natural moisture barrier. Most people with oily skin tend to neglect moisturizing their skin and often end up with greasy but dehydrated skin which show up as flaky patches. So, ensure you use water-based skin hydrator. Products with hyaluronic acid and argan oil work wonders for oily skin. You can use a serum, if a moisturizer feels heavy on the skin, but do not miss moisturizing your skin.

If you have normal skin: You are one lucky one! Most lightweight moisturizers work for you. Just check your skin condition of the moment and pick a product that will help you manage the issue. On regular days, you can try lotions rather than creams to protect your skin. Lotions with aloe vera, almond oil, argan oil are perfect to keep your skin in top shape. You can layer it over a serum to manage any skin condition like uneven skin tone, fine lines etc.

If you have combination skin type: You have to do double duty for your skin. Use a lightweight, water-based moisturizer for the oily T-zone or C-zone of your face and a normal lotion for the rest of your face and neck. You can use a mattifying cream on your face to control excess grease and get a velvety smooth texture. If using a cream feels heavy on hot, humid days then go a with a moisturizing serum during the day, and a moisturizer at night.
